An off grid cabin with hot shower and pizza oven… if you are looking for a bothy with comfort, the Hinterlandes Hidden Hut is hard to beat! We went as a birthday present for The Husband, and it definitely ranks as one of our best glamping adventures to date.

THE LOCATION
It’s a secret!
Part of the concept of the Hinterlandes properties (there are also a few cabins, and a converted bus) is that they are hidden, and therefore they only share the exact location once you have booked. I won’t spoil the surprise, but what I can tell you is it is nestled atop a hill, above Crummock Water and Buttermere, with fabulous views on both sides over the Lakes and out towards the Cumbrian coast.
You will be provided with a what3words link to find the hut. For the uninitiated, what3words is a website that has divided the world into grids of three-by-three metres, and each given a unique combination of three words. Put the three words you are given into the website and you’ll find an exact location on a map, within three metres.
If you are coming back after dark you will definitely need a head torch, and you will be grateful for packing light as anything you want with you in the Hinterlandes Hidden Hut must be carried up the hill.
THE HUT
The Hinterlandes Hidden Hut is only little – 7ft x 12ft – but has been well designed to feel cosy, without being too cramped. The décor is rustic Scandi-cabin chic – this is not your usual roughing it, off grid bothy experience! The tiny bathroom consists of a composting loo, and small (hot!) shower.
Solar power provides lighting, and battery packs offer charging for your gadgets. There is minimal mobile signal up the hill, and clearly no WiFi.
The wood fired stove kept the hut very toasty, even as temperatures dropped at night.
THE EXTRAS
The main reason I booked the Hinterlandes Hidden Hut for The Husband’s birthday was that he has coveted a pizza oven for ages, and the hut comes complete with an Ooni. For those not subject to lengthy weekly explanations of why one of these are needed in your life, this is a small wood fired pizza oven which heats to about 500˚C allowing you to make pretty incredible pizzas at home! If you don’t fancy pizza, there is a small camping stove and a hot plate on wood fired stove. A Yeti cool box outside keeps food stuffs relatively fresh, but it is best to plan to bring your produce daily.
THE LESS LOVEABLE
The instructions informed us that the Hinterlandes Hidden Hut was to be found half an hour up a “steep” hill, which we rather smugly dismissed as aimed at far less outdoorsy types than ourselves… twenty minutes later, hot and sweaty we felt somewhat contrite! It is not a difficult walk, but it is definitely steep and it does take about 30 minutes. Clearly this gorgeous seclusion is the whole point of an off grid hut! So it is not a downside, merely a warning to come prepared with less hubris than us!
